Sage's Cafe

A Week of Breakfasts!

Sage's Cafe is by far my absolute favorite place to get breakfast! A quaint little vegan, organic diner in downtown Salt Lake City. It was tradition while I lived there to get brunch every Sunday. Something I miss very much. I always order the breakfast sandwich (vegetarian sausage, scrambled tofu, cheeze sauce, with hash browns), vanilla mint shake and a slice of tiramisu cake! A meal to die for... even to-go!

Donuts!

I am excited to share with you my three favorite donut shops:

The Donut Man (Glendora, CA)

I went here about 3 years ago and I think about it almost daily. It is incredible how many large fresh strawberries they can fit into a glazed donut. If you are ever in the Southern California area, make sure to stop! (about 30 miles inland of LA)

Ronalds Donuts (Las Vegas, NV)

If you are vegan, you most likely know of and have had the pleasure of enjoying Ronalds Donuts. Their vegan cream filled (soy custard) donut takes the cake of any vegan donut I have ever tried, it melts in your mouth! Totally worth a spontaneous 475 mile trip just to get a pretty pink box!

Yum Yum Donuts (San Diego, CA)

The name was the first thing that attracted me to Yum Yum Donuts, even their bags are adorable! This is the closest place to my current home. My favorite donut is a vanilla iced with rainbow sprinkles. Even Marty loves them...

Einstein Bros. Bagels

I wanted to share with everyone my absolute favorite bagel concoction...

Go to your local Einstein Bros. Bagels and order a sun dried tomato bagel with pesto sauce, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, toasted and open face. You'll thank me.

Canned Lunch

Ran to Henry's for a quick canned lunch, thanks to Erin's tip. Mixed a can of black beans and brown rice with a half can of roasted garlic tomatoes in a bowl, microwaved for 2 minutes, added some cheese on top and viola!

Definitely something that I will be taking to work for a quick, high protein meal.

Pizza

Last night Jon and I made veggie sausage, olive and artichoke heart pizza.

The dough, marinara sauce, cheese, olives and artichoke hearts were all Trader Joe's Brand. The sausage was Morning Star sausage links.

Making pizza is fun and super easy. I suggest everyone try it!

Grilled Artichokes with Lemon Aioli

Finally! After posting photos to Myspace and Facebook for about three years now, I stopped procrastinating and am now ready to have a site where I can post everything I eat, cook, bake, make and enjoy!

I will start off with my most favorite dish—ARTICHOKES! This is my favorite way to prepare them!

Grilled Artichokes

Ingredients:
artichoke(s)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 clove crushed or chopped garlic

Directions:
1. Cut the artichoke in half.

2. Remove the fuzzy centers and scratchy leaves.

3. Trim the outer leaves with scissors.

4. If you prefer, soak in lemon water until ready to cook.

5. Cook in a pot of salted water until tender, but not fully cooked. Approx. 30 minutes.

6. Drain and squeeze out the excess water.

If grilling:
Toss the artichokes with the olive oil and garlic. Grill artichokes until golden brown.

If pan frying (the method I am using):
Put olive oil and garlic in pan, place artichokes centers down. Cook artichokes on Med-High until golden brown, 10-15 minutes.

Lemon Aioli

Ingredients:
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 clove crushed or chopped garlic
1/2 lemon, juice and zest
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
1. Stir everything.

ENJOY!
