Foodie Friday: Shepherd's Pie

This Foodie Friday is a bit different, I want to know YOUR recipes and suggestions for a meal that we've all had once in our life. A comfort food for some and actually a first for me, as of last week.

Shepherd's Pie. What's in it? I never knew; some sort of meat, veggies?, potatoes... I feel like it's one of those things, like meatloaf, that you had to eat as a kid and you make it when you become a parent, but what's in it exactly?

Since I had never tried something I've heard about all my life, I decided to give Amy's a go... It wasn't anything special, particularly bland (I had to add hot sauce to give it some flavor!). BUT I want to make one myself, from scratch, so what did you grow up with or think tastes best inside Shepherd's Pie?!

  1. The Shepard's Pie I posted on blog was amazing. Really delicious and flavorful. I'm going to make it again soon! Here's the link:

You can use veggie crumbles or w/e instead of ground meat!

  2. That sounds really good today! I think I am going to make this later - http://ohsheglows.com/2011/03/17/vegan-shepherds-pie-with-gravy/

Except with Field Roast sausage instead; I can't eat veggie crumbles because they have milk and egg in them.

    What a good idea!

  3. I'd say veggie mince, onion, carrot, peas and a thick gravy with creamy mash on top.

    :)

I LOVE Shepherd's Pie! It goes best with baked beans. Honest!

  5. Mine is really easy to make..
    .faux ground beef
    .package of gravy
    .can of corn, drained
    .can of green beans, drained
    .instant mashed potatoes
    .cheese or faux cheese

Preheat oven to 350. Brown "meat", season as desired. Prepared mashed potatoes. Prepare gravy.
In a baking dish start the layering, starting with "meat", then gravy, then corn, then green beans, then potatoes. Add cheese on top. Cover and bake for 20. Uncover and bake for 5 more minutes to melt the cheese.

  7. I'd never had shepherd's pie until I was an adult either. It's been awhile since I've vegan-ized recipes regularly, but I made a vegetarian version of this one a few years ago and it was really tasty! Just swap in soy crumbles and veggie broth or no-beef broth and you're good to go!
