vintage suitcase kitty bed

Before I even had Marty, this photo inspired me to one day have a vintage suitcase kitty bed for my future woogie. Once Jon and I got Marty the dream was always talked about but neither of us put the idea into motion. Until now. Jon found a suitcase a few months back and wanted to take on the task of making and surprising Marty. Here is the finished product!

She's in love.

DIY - frame for polaroids

After stumbling upon Meredith's DIY frame + 52 weeks of instax project I thought this would be an excellent idea for one of Jon's birthday gifts. I had a lot of fun making it, with the help of a friend, and very happy with the turnout!

What you will need:

wood frame, wire or some sort of string, frame hanging eyelets, mini or regular size clothespins, ruler or measuring tape, pencil and possibly a hammer.

I originally wanted to buy a frame, sand it a bit and paint it orange, but I came across this lovely, already rustic-esque blue frame that works well with the colors in our living room.

You'll want to measure and mark the distance between eyelets to match on each side so the string or wire will hang straight. This is where a hammer came in handy, lightly hammer the eyelet in where you marked until you can grasp it and twist them tightly in.

Now feed your string between eyelets, tying tight knots!

You can clip the string to not show or leave it long, whatever your preference. If you use wire, twist the wire to make sure it isn't poking out.

Lastly, hang the frame and clip all your photos on with clothespins.

Jon's 28th Birthday Festivities

Friday was Jon's birthday and although the day was filled with old man jokes (he's only 28), we had a lovely day celebrating his existence in Long Beach, LA and stuck in traffic, ha!

First we started the day off with coffee and cherries for the drive up to Long Beach.

Birthday cut for the birthday boy.

We picked up his friend + girlfriend and headed to Holé Molé for lunch.

From there we shoved off to Los Angeles for two art shows and a bit of window shopping.

If you're in LA during the remainder of July, be sure to check out Gallery 1988 to see Crazy 4 Cult 5, where 100 artists aim their art at classic cult films.

Oh, and ice cream! ...which was a bad idea in this heat.

Poor Jon dropped his phone and this subsequently happened.

Jon chose Veggie Grill for dinner, which was no surprise.

Yesterday Jon continued his birthday weekend at Comic-Con!

We also visited The Flaming C fan-art gallery. Congrats to the ever-amazing Rachele who had her print up at the gallery. If you live in San Diego and want to check it out, the gallery is still open until 5 o'clock tonight.

Independence Day: taking a turn for the worst

Independence Day started off well enough: worked (who says no to time and a half?!), took a good nap, picked the boy up from work and headed to Fiesta Island for festivities.

Fiesta Island is big and it was crowded, but since I knew the whereabouts of where SeaWorld's fireworks take place we luckily got to sit right under them, on the edge of the water. The show was great and we managed to see 4 other shows from where we were sitting!

As we were walking back to the car we noticed a fight happening. Since this is a large island with only a one way lane of traffic there were no police around. The fight turned into a full on brawl including a bunch of people and weapons. Innocent bystanders were in their cars inching into the line of other backed up traffic trying to get out, honking repeatedly and calling 911.

Unfortunately my car was in the line of fire and hit with two large rocks. The first hit shattered my driver side mirror and as I turned around to see how close they were to my vehicle another hit the top of my car. I saw who threw it and as they jumped into their car to speed off on the dirt shoulder, I grabbed the plate number. 911 was flooding with calls, but eventually I gave my statement over the phone along with the plate number. Luckily the cops got word and nabbed the car before they could get off the island. An hour later, we finally reached the end of the island where the police were. A jeep with a busted back window was also in the vicinity of the accident and waiting. The cop took our statements and information again, made us identify the person who did it (scary!) and proceeded to tell us that since the rocks were thrown from the individual and not physically hit with the car that their insurance would not cover the damage.

I have the bare minimum of insurance so it looks like I'll be paying for this out of pocket. My only option thereafter is to take them to small claims court, which I'm not entirely sure is worth it. It amazes me that someone could do something like this, get caught and leave scot-free. 'MERICA!

This is what freedom looks like:

Has anyone ever changed the complete side mirror on a vehicle? If so, I would appreciate any input.

monday funday

One of the perks of having a job with no set schedule is you never really get the case of the Mondays! It's exciting having various days off and sometimes not having two days off in a row is fine by me, it's like having two mini workweeks in one!

Jon owed me breakfast so this morning we strolled over to The Mission to devour some delicious Papas Con Soyrizo.

Since we have zoo passes I felt like roaming around and finally (after years of waiting) got to see my very first Slow Loris! I saw this video a couple years ago and have since been on the prowl at every zoo I visit to find them. Every time we visit in San Diego it is the first area we hit and they are always hidden/asleep. Luckily the zoo keeper was feeding the little guy grapes and bananas when we got there, so so adorable! I wish I could have snapped a photo, but the glare on the glass was too bad. But look at this guy!

By 2pm it was blazing hot outside, so we grabbed my favorite--shaved ice! I'm all about Tigers Blood for those of you who don't personally know me, but this time I screwed up and got half blue raspberry, never again.

Now I'm off to start this book and hang out with this beaut, happy Monday!

Foodie Friday: '11 San Diego County Fair

I love fairs! Who doesn't?! Rides, food, shopping, food, people-watching, food, music, food, games, food, photobooths and local animals, art and gardening! Jon and I took Tuesday off to go to the San Diego County Fair. I chose Tuesday in particular because it's Taste of the Fair Tuesday and every food vendor has an item for $2. Instead of getting 2 or 3 large things (pretty much all you have room for), we got a bunch of samples that in my opinion was just the right amount of food.

Fried everything! This is America, where it's a race to be fat and unhealthy:

$2 fried garlic artichoke hearts (I'm not big on fried foods, but this was a must-have for obvious reasons):

$2 slice of cheese pizza:

$2 cinnamon roll:

$2 birthday cake Dippin Dots:

one bite of a $2 Australian battered potato with cheese and hot sauce:

Jon talked me into getting a blooming onion because I'm always talking about them. I ended up giving 90% of it away to two girls because it was just TOO much fried food at once:

Have you gone to the Fair yet this year? If you live in Southern California and you're planning on visiting the San Diego County Fair, make sure to get discounted tickets ($11) at Albertsons and park for free at the Horse Park less than a mile away from the fairgrounds, with free shuttles on double decker buses!
